There have been many references to this over the years, but no-one has been able to turn up a recording, sadly.

Slowly Our Eyes is on the Jake in a Box DVD. Its melody got reused for Isabel Makes Love. The other three are very hard to obtain, as there are no official recordings available. The Cenotaph is on YouTube, performed by another Jake fan. Side by Side is only available on the limited edition CD The Jake Thackray Project, which was produced by members of this group 10 years ago, before most of Jake’s material was released on CD.

In her introduction to Jake’s book of lyrics (Jake’s Progress), Esther Rantzen intimates that Reggie is fictional but may well be based upon the clumsiness of none other than Jake himself.

Whilst the suggestion that this might have happened is utterly intriguing, I am afraid that I have real doubts. Jake almost never sang other people’s songs (Brassens is the one exception), and by 1994, when the song came out, Jake’s career as a ‘performing dick’ seems to have been confined to the folk club circuit. 🙁

On the DVD Jake is definitely playing with the guitar tuned down. I am convinced that this is because his voice dropped as time went on.

Having seen your great versions from 3 years ago, I look forward to seeing some more YouTube clips of you performing now. (BTW I also think that your Johnny Cash covers are excellent!)

                              Hi Pete

The situation is currently as Ian describes it, I am playing the Lymm Jubilee Gardening Club’s annual knees-up in early March, but I suspect that you have to be a member to be there! I shall put my mind to the possibility of something in Cheshire (or the northwest), although it is always good to vary the venue as it pulls in a new audience. If you have any suggestions re. other possible venues (or contacts), please let me know!

Stuart Maconie (an established Jake fan) talks in the programme about seeing Jake live and doing his plastic encore talking bit. Sadly, they did not play the wonderful recording of Jake talking about encores on the LP Jake Thackray and Songs.
